PRE-FIX: MISALIGNMENT AND CREATIVE PRACTICE OTHERWISE

Pre-Fix: Misalignment and Creative Practice Otherwise explores how creative practices can respond to conditions where established systems, methods, and scales no longer align with complex ecological, social, and/or technological realities. Rather than understanding misalignment as a failure to be corrected, this issue considers disruption, uncertainty, and displacement as productive conditions through which alternative forms of thinking, making, and learning can emerge.
Focusing on three interconnected conditions—crisis, scale, and pedagogy—the issue examines how creative practices navigate ecological and social challenges, tensions between local actions and wider planetary systems, and transformations in knowledge production. Within these shifting conditions, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence further challenge existing relationships between authorship, learning, and creative processes.
Through critical essays, artistic practices, design research, and pedagogical experiments, the issue explores how misalignment can generate new ways of sensing, creating, and imagining otherwise.

We invite contributions that explore:

• How can creative practices engage with ecological, social, or technological crises by working through conditions of uncertainty, disruption, and misalignment rather than seeking only to repair or correct them?

• How do questions of scale reveal tensions and new relationships between bodies, environments, technologies, and wider ecological, social, and infrastructural systems?

• How might creative education respond to the shifts and misalignments introduced by AI and emerging technologies?
